Dear Mr. Martin,
Thank you for contacting me about election integrity. I appreciate you taking the time to express your views. Hearing directly from Michiganders like you helps inform me of the issues that matter to our state. I’m so grateful for your input.
The right to vote is foundational to our democracy. Every American should have the equal opportunity to exercise that constitutional right. This means ensuring unfettered access to the ballot box. Laws that impose restrictions on voting rights, as well as those making it difficult to register to vote, hinder our democracy. I am committed to finding ways to make our elections more transparent and our ballot boxes more accessible to every American. As your voice in the Senate, I am committed to ensuring Michigan voters, as well as voters across the country, continue to have their voices heard on Election Day.
I have sponsored multiple initiatives to preserve this fundamental right, such as the Natural Disaster and Emergency Ballot Act of 2020, which would require all states to offer a universal vote-by-mail option. I was also proud to sponsor the For the People Act, John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act. Reform is needed to ensure that all Americans have access to the ballot box and Congress must take action.
The Freedom to Vote Act was introduced on September 14, 2021. Much like the For the People act, this bill would provide comprehensive reform to the way we engage campaign finance, give voters new ways to exercise their right to vote, protect election security infrastructure and make Election Day a holiday. I was happy to vote in favor of moving this important legislation forward and stand ready to work with my colleagues to find commonsense solutions to ensure every American can safely exercise their right to vote. Please be assured, I will keep your views in mind as when this legislation comes to the Senate Floor.
Thank you again for contacting me. I always enjoy hearing from you and hope that you take the time to contact me again soon. For more information, please feel free to visit my website, http://www.peters.senate.gov, or find me on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram @SenGaryPeters.
